About the film

Antonio Vaca is a 60-year-old retired Bolivian bullfighter who has decided to return to his old trade to find his missing daughter. For him, the concept of justice has lost all meaning: he has run out of patience and money searching for his daughter through legal means in vain. Thus, he decides to put on his bullfighter suit and cape once again, determined to continue with his trade until he finds her. Antonio travels following his instinct, convinced that his daughter is still alive and that her kidnapper walks the same paths as him, like a wicked shadow following his footsteps. He feels that his freedom was stripped away the day Valeria was kidnapped and that he is now trapped in a labyrinth, where his sole purpose is to find her.

“Beneath the fury” explores the inner worlds of its characters, where the human spirit seems to be governed by unconscious and irrational forces. The film establishes various visual comparisons between freedom and confinement, will and frustration. It shows how characters are denied their freedom and must bend their will to a violent and oppressive destiny. The documentary seeks to express the complexities that define us as humans in hostile environments, where violence and forced disappearances silently mark lives, and where it might perhaps be possible to finally find redemption.
