Music and nature rely on diversity, harmony, and balance. When pushed too far, they begin to unravel. In this performance film, a children’s string quartet becomes a living metaphor for ecosystems under strain. As unseen forces tighten their strings, the tension builds, echoing the fragile tipping points of our planet. Through Greek mythology, dance, and classical music, this piece explores the fine line between resilience and collapse.

About the film

Detuning Tipping Points is an experimental performance film that draws a connection between the delicate balance of music and the fragile ecosystems of our planet. At its center, a children’s string quartet becomes a living metaphor for nature under increasing pressure. As unseen forces tighten the strings of their instruments, tension gradually builds, reflecting the environmental tipping points at which resilience can give way to irreversible change.

Blending classical music, dance, performance, and Greek mythology, the film explores the relationship between diversity, harmony, resistance, and collapse. Through its visual and musical language, Detuning Tipping Points transforms ecological concerns into a physical and emotional experience, inviting audiences to consider how far natural systems can be pushed before their balance begins to unravel.

About the director

Theo Rekelhof (he/him) is an environmental artist, filmmaker, and advocate for nature’s emancipation. Working at the intersection of music and ecology, his artistic practice explores their shared dependence on diversity, harmony, and balance. He sees music as one of humanity’s most profound forms of expression—a complex and life-giving force that reflects the interconnected systems found in nature.

Through film, contemporary installations, and performance, Rekelhof seeks to inspire deeper empathy for the planet and its ecosystems while drawing attention to ecological and social concerns. He wrote, directed, and produced Detuning Tipping Points in collaboration with Amsterdamse Fonds voor de Kunsten, Hebe de Champeaux, and Eric Matser.
