Madhab inherited the sacred art of breathing life into the inanimate from his father, weaving movement, laughter, and tears into his puppetry. unhesitatingly, he lapped it up and made it central to his existence. Now, in the twilight of his years, his once-vibrant skills dim alongside his fading strength. As puppet theatres lose allure and his troupe dwindles, Madhab confronts the spectre of obscurity. "Dolls Don't Die" paints a poetic tableau of his journey—a delicate dance between the harsh rhythms of reality and the sublime melodies of an impassioned artist's dreams.

About the film

Dolls Don’t Die follows Madhab, a traditional puppeteer from a rural village in India whose life has become inseparable from his art. Filmed over five years, the documentary captures intimate moments from Madhab’s everyday life alongside the energy and imagination of his puppet performances. As his strength begins to fade and audiences for traditional puppet theatre diminish, he continues his determined effort to keep the artistic practice he inherited alive.

What began as the filmmaker’s fascination with a vibrant performance gradually became a portrait of an indomitable artistic spirit confronting uncertainty and disappearance. Through Madhab’s personal journey, Dolls Don’t Die reflects on the wider struggles of traditional and independent artists whose practices risk being forgotten, exploring the enduring relationship between creativity, identity, survival, and an artist’s refusal to let his art die.
